What is your favourite song of all time?

It’s impossible to pick just one, so I’lll just tell you my favourite song so far this year is “Dreams” by Beck.

Can you remember when you fell in love with it?

As soon as I heard it! I’ve been a Beck fan for yearrrrrrrs and it’s always exciting to hear new stuff from him. His duet with Bat For Lashes – “Let’s Get Lost” – is utterly gorgeous as well, I only heard it last week for the first time.

Has a song or album ever changed your life?

I remember hearing “Cathedral Heat” by Kristin Hersh for the first time at a friend’s house, sitting bolt upright and demanding to know who it was. That was a gamechanger. I’d been aware of Throwing Muses before that of course but “Sky Motel” was my gateway into Kristin’s incredible solo career.

If you could only listen to five albums for the rest of time, what would they be?

The first five I thought of are:

Hanne Hukkelberg – Featherbrain
Kristin Hersh – Sky Motel
Blur – Modern Life Is Rubbish
Arcade Fire – Funeral
Radiohead – Hail To The Thief

How much of your day do you spend listening to music?

About 30%. I tend to focus on music more than whatever I’m supposed to be doing, so I have to work in silence most of the time to get anything done.

What’s your ideal time and place for listening to music?

When I moved into my current house 2 years ago I bought a Ruark R4 so I could listen to music properly – before that I’d never owned nice speakers so it feels like a treat sitting on my sofa and turning the music up. When I lived in London I loved listening to music while I was travelling around the city – Bristol is so small I rarely get the opportunity but now the weather’s improving it could be time for some long musical walks.

What’s the best gig/show you’ve ever been to?

Carina Round playing solo at Water Rats in Kings Cross in 2007. I stood 5 feet away from her while she screamed and sang her heart out. It was incredible.

Approximately how big is your music collection? And in what format?

My digital collection overtook my two massive shelves of doublestacked CDs a while ago, and I have a very small and slow growing vinyl collection now as well. I think I own about 5 LPs at the moment.

What does music mean to you?

It’s a language, a way of telling stories through sharing emotion. It’s fundamental, like water or earth. It’s been the most important thing in my life for as long as I can remember.

What song should we all go and listen to right now to make our day better?

“Dreams” by Beck, of course!
