Dennis Dunaway Interview

Dennis Dunaway was the bassist for the Alice Cooper band, co-writing and playing on hits like I’m Eighteen and School’s Out and changing the face of rock music in the early 1970s. He’s written a book about the experience, and here’s what he has to say about it: “Follow your dreams! That’s what my book Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs! My Adventures in The Alice Cooper Group is about. It’s available wherever books are sold, and the audio version, which I narrated myself, is available at”

This is his music…

What is your favourite song of all time?

I love “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison.

Can you remember when you fell in love with it?

My wife Cindy turned me on to the Astral Weeks album around 1975.

Has a song or album ever changed your life?

In 1963, I saw Duane Eddy  and the Rebels play “Rebel Rouser” live. That made me decide to start a band. The Beatles and the whole British Invasion had a major impact on me.

If you could only listen to five albums for the rest of time, what would they be?

Astral Weeks, The Rising, Highway 61 Revisited, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Take Five.

How much of your day do you spend listening to music?

I can be at the supermarket and Cindy will say, you’re writing a song aren’t you? That’s because she sees my head subtly bobbing up and down. Musical vibrations are always bouncing in my skull. I even dream melodies.

What’s your ideal time and place for listening to music?

My favorite listening happens very late at night when all the distractions have finally ceased.

What’s the best gig/show you’ve ever been to?

The Young Rascals, the original Animals, and the Yardbirds with Beck and Page was a stellar show. The Alice Cooper group at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was amazing as well.

Approximately how big is your music collection? And in what format?

I have walls of vinyl albums and bins full of CDs representing most musical styles.

What does music mean to you?

Besides my family, it’s my joy and purpose on this earth.

What song should we all go and listen to right now to make our day better?
