Carnie Wilson

Carnie Wilson Interview

by

Carnie Wilson is the daughter of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson and The Honeys singer Marilyn Rovell and is a star in her own right as part of pop group Wilson Phillips as well as featuring on many TV shows including The View and Carnie Wilson: Unstapled.

This is her music…

What is your favourite song of all time?

That’s an insanely hard question to answer!! There are four in my mind… God Only Knows, Dreams, September, and Evergreen. Each one has such a meaningful, special place in my heart.  They all made me fall in love with music-
God for the chord changes, Dreams for that chorus and Stevie’s vocal, September for the rhythm and the horns, and Evergreen – well because that’s the sweetest love song ever & she’s my favorite singer of all time.

Can you remember when you fell in love with it?

I fell in love with these songs as a young child. I have fond  memories in my car, in my room, at school. They encompassed my childhood.

Has a song or album ever changed your life?

Surf’s Up – the song – changed my life at 12 years old. This is when I used to listen to music with headphones on -laying on my waterbed. When I really listened to the complexity of this work of art… I then knew how gifted my father was and heard his songs objectively … I was totally floored. It broke my heart in a good way. I had to share that destiny with him.

If you could only listen to five albums for the rest of time, what would they be?

1.History (MJ)
2.Earth Wind and Fire Greatest Hits Vol 1&2
3. The Eagles Greatest Hits
4. Best of Sade
( notice I have many of their songs because there are too many great ones!!!!)

How much of your day do you spend listening to music?

Every day is different depending on work ,but it’s at least an hour. The more I listen, the more hopeful I stay.

What’s your ideal time and place for listening to music?

I love blasting music in my car!! I also love laying in bed in the dark with headphones- nothing like that!!! You hear everything and usually discover more sounds each time.

What’s the best gig/show you’ve ever been to?

The best concert I’ve ever been to is a tie between Toto back in the 80’s… Best music and singing ever….
And a double bill with Luther Vandross and Anita Baker…. Need I say more? Outer body for me.

Approximately how big is your music collection? And in what format?

My music collection is about 5000 CDs. I don’t take care of them and never listen anymore – I’m on my iTunes mostly. My husband Rob???? Well that’s another story… He’s got the biggest collection of albums and about 15,000 CDs. It’s impressive.

What does music mean to you?

Music is absolutely everything. It’s release, it’s creativity, it’s pleasure, it’s pain. It’s so necessary. It’s lifesaving.

What song should we all go and listen to right now to make our day better?

Go listen to One Of These Nights by the Eagles. Holy fuck.

Just a note to say thank you to all the fans who have listened to and loved the music of Wilson Phillips throughout the last 26 years. That music is my soul and it’s the most meaningful of all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️My connection to you all.
